Song devotional: ‘No Longer Slaves’ by Bethel Music

Listen to the original here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxkNj5hcy5E.

This song is a reminder that we are called to face fear with faith and to walk in God’s victory, because the battle is His and He’ll complete His salvation plan in us. For me personally, this song makes me reflect on the fear and insecurity I used to live in, compared with the abundant joy and security of being a child of God.

I invite you to listen, sing or play along to this song with me. As you do so, I’d also encourage you to meditate on the lyrics of the song as well as these Bible verses, and to spend some time thinking about how God has taken us from being slaves to fear, to being His beloved children.

Read

‘Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.’
Galatians 4:7
‘For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.’
2 Timothy 1:7

Reflect

  1. What did it mean to you personally to be a ‘slave to fear’?
  2. How does that compare to being a ‘child of God’?
  3. What things are you currently tempted to be fearful about?
  4. How has God taken you from being a slave to fear, to being His beloved child, through His salvation plan? How does this translate in your own life?

Sing

No Longer Slaves

You unravel me with a melody
You surround me with a song
Of deliverance from my enemies
‘Til all my fears are gone

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

From my mother’s womb
You have chosen me
Love has called my name
I’ve been born again to a family
Your blood flows through my veins

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

You split the sea
So I could walk right through it
My fears are drowned in perfect love
You rescued me
And I will stand and sing
I am a child of God

You split the sea
So I could walk right through it
You drown my fears in perfect love
You rescued me
And I will stand and sing
I am a child of God
I am a child of God
I am a child of God

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
